Kremena Dimitrova

Constructing new stories from old, my work marries words with images in ways that can bring to light and celebrate histories which would otherwise remain hidden, overlooked or side-lined...

Kremena is a London based illustrator-as-historian, lecturer and researcher who specialises in visualising history within the heritage sector. Her expertise lies in narrative and situated illustration methods, reportage drawing, public history and visual historiography, site-specific and public art, visual interventions, use of creative processes and application of artistic insights in diverse educational, cultural and heritage settings.

As an illustrator, Kremena has had a number of exhibitions. Her work also features in print, online, book publishing, design and advertising. Major creative projects range from research residencies in collaboration with Historic England to Arts Council England and National Lottery Heritage Funded (hi)storytelling commissions. Clients include The West Cheshire Museums, The National Memorial Arboretum, East Street Arts, The University of Manchester and The John Rylands Library. Many of Kremena’s commissions are socially-engaged in nature and involve collaborating with the public to explore history, culture and heritage in creative and memorable ways - through art.

As an educator, Kremena has extensive experience in delivering face-to-face and online art related events, talks, lectures and workshops in formal and informal educational settings including at Middlesex University, The University of Portsmouth, The University of East London, Benjamin Franklin House, The Jewish Museum, Bishop’s Stortford Museum, L’Ecole de Battersea and Cameron Vale School. Exploring different media, from drawing, painting and printmaking to collage and comics making, participants are encouraged to be imaginative in a calm, creative and playful environment.

Kremena holds a BA (Hons) Illustration and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education in Teaching and Supporting Learning from Middlesex University. She also studied an MA Art and Design in Education at UCL Institute of Education and is currently conducting a PHD in visualising history through comics at the University of Portsmouth. Kremena is a Fellow of The Higher Education Academy – Advance HE and a member of The Social History Society of the United Kingdom.
